Thursday and Friday

Howdy all. What a great day. The kids were fantastic for our guests from the symphony, and were quite engaged with the presentation and music selections. I wished I had videotaped their movements to Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite" ,with their heads bobbing up and down, looking like birds. A classic moment. Please remember that Monday brings us our trip to the symphony. All students will need bag lunches to school.

Our Golden Gulch Gold Rush simulation has the kids very excited about earning imaginary gold nuggets and proving their skills and knowledge of Caliofornia mining in the mid 1800's.

The students are responsible for the following tonight:

-Reading Log
-Math 80 (1-15, most student completed this in class)
-Math 15B pretest
-read Reflections pages 246 - 249 (welcome to use as a reading log entry)
-Abbreviation worksheet, page 49 (also started in class)

Respectfully, Mr. B

Wednesday

Howdy all. Sorry about the lack of a blog entry yesterday. The site was down, and therefore I emailed the class their assignments and responsibilities. Hopefully it didn't cause too much confusion.

I sent home a notice with the kids today regarding this weekend's Parents' Workshop at Watsonville High. It's a great opportunity to help you help your children with academic and social issues. Please ask your child for the flyer.

Thursday brings us a visit from the Santa Cruz Symphony. They will be offering a preview of what next Monday's field trip will bring us. If your child has not returned their permission slip for Monday, they are due no later than Friday of this week! The kids know who they are! Thursday afternoon will allow the class the opportunity to view the 6th grade science fair. The activities are piling up!

The kids have some extra math work tonight based on the behavior of the class during our lesson. I wish them luck.

Students are responsible for the following:

-Reading Log
-California Reflections WB pages 62 -63 (started in class)
-California Reflections page 243, review questions 1-5
-Math lessons 78 + 79 (all)

REVENGE OF THE SUGARED STUDENT

Valentine's Day is such a hoot. It is one of the few days a year that I get to send the kids home completely amped up on sugar! Usually, I get them after they have been amped at home with Poptarts and sugary cereal. Enjoy their excess energy! Hopefully not many stomach aches ensue.

Not much in the way of homework tonight. I figure that the sugar high will result in a homework low.
The kids are responsible for:

-Reading log
-Math 76 (all)
-Sadako, "Epilogue" vocabulary and questions (all)

Take it easy,
Mr. B

This district....

is taking a dark turn with the proposed budget cuts for the upcoming 2008-2009 school year. Serious changes are in store that will negatively affect your child's education. I encourage folks to attend the Feb. 27th Board Meeting to voice their concerns and show a united front as a concerned community. Just because we are Rio does not mean that we will be immune to what is happening to PVUSD as a whole. Teachers will be relocated, class sizes will increase and much-needed asistance programs will be cut. For example, not one elementary school will have a nurse next year. Bizarre, but expendable according to PVUSD.
This is also a contract negotiation year for teachers. As many of you know, we are one of the lowest paid districts in the state, and the cuts on the table have all but ruled out a simple cost-of-living salary increase. Again, expendable according to PVUSD. Teachers number 1,200 in the district, but serve 30,000 students and their families. The families are our bargaining chip, and we need your voices and actions to help us secure a living wage. We don't want to be priced out of the area, but it is happening. We lost two examplary teachers last year to other districts, and several more have made it clear that this will be their last year at Rio for similar reasons.

On a happier note, tomorrow is Valentine's Day and the class will be celebrating during the last half hour of the day. Treats and valentines may gladly make their way to school, as long as they are considering the whole class, and not just a few select friends. Tomorrow is also a spirit day, and students are encouraged to wear Valentine's colors. Reds, pinks, purples and whites.

Students are responsible for the following tonight:

-Reading Log
-Science text page 216 and science WB pp 86-87
-Sadako, read chapter 9 and complete vocabulary (all) and questions 1-5

another short week...

Holy cow, do you folks just feed these kids sugar over three day weekends? The class was a rambunctious crew today, but we did manage to begin our Gold Rush simulation and create terrariums for our new science unit on ecosystems.

Please check out the Green Folders, as they are filled with goodies and two, count 'em two, permission slips. Wow!

Students are responsible for the following tonight:

-Reading Log
-Math 75 (16-30)
-Math 14B
-Science WB pages 84-85 (started at school)
-Sadako packet, chapter 7

bustin' out & STREP!!

I have been informed by the school nurse that the class has been exposed to STREP. Invidual notices will be sent home on Friday. Stay healthy!

We have gone through two writing samples in these few weeks back from winter break, one regarding dreams in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and the other with descriptions of a favorite place. The kids have been troopers with this work, and I am happy to report that they are coming along quite well. The favorite place pieces will be going home in next week's Green Folders, and we are creating a classroom anthology for the dream pieces that will be bound and include student art work as well. These will be finished in the next two weeks, so expect them soon.

Tomorrow brings a substantial science test for the class, as we have wrapped our studies of food webs & chains. If last week's science vocabulary was any indictation, tomorrow's test will be a breeze.

Please be mindful of next Monday's holiday. No school!!!

Kids are responsible for the following tonight:

-Reading Log (due tomorrow)
-Math 73 (all)
-a quick review of the science material would be helpful.

Respectfully, Mr. B
